Watercolor Autumn Landscape

(c) M Pruitt 2008

This my newest ACEO, "Autum Landscape 1". It is painted with watercolor on 140lb cold press.

Several special techniques were used in this watercolor landscape.

First, I used wet in wet to create the furthest trees. While the sky was still damp, I began painting the trees - delicately touching the brush to the paper so that the watercolor would spread in the shape of trees. I did several layers, with darker color, and then, while still wet, I used the tip of a pocket knife to carefully scratch in some tree trunks. This allowed the paint to settle in the scratches, making the tree trunks a bit darker.

After the background trees were completely dried, I complimented the darker scratched tree trunks with thinly painted trees using Daniel Smiths "Buff Titanium". It is a semi-transparent watercolor and added another layer to the trees for depth.

Another fun technique I used in this painting is a "Cheap Joe's" spatter screen. Spatters can be achieved in a variety of ways, but I really like this spatter screen. I used a variety of colors for my spatter and my rigger brush to turn some of it into grass blades!
