Sweet September Saturdays by Artist/Designer/Photographer Glenna Normyle

Thank you very much for inviting me to write about ACEO's and ETSY. As we pass from one season to another you can really feel it and certainly see it. This new season Fall 2009 is just starting for us here in New England. Cooler nights herald the beginning of the Fall season for us. I am also very much swayed in my creativity at this point. I have been creating ACEO's with Fall, back to school, owl, bird and Christmas themes. Some ideas for ACEO's come to me and they are so simple in design. This Hoot Owl Aceo I made was simple to make and fun. A few months ago I had ordered a package of various iron on items, beautful embellishments etc...from a fellow Etsian. When I received my order I took one look at this owl and I said to myself, very cute, unique I really would like to preserve it on aceo cardstock to share with someone else. Enjoy! I can’t help it… the island got into my blood. I want to move there and just keep soaking in that healthful island living!

I totally and completely fell in love with Plumeria's! They were blooming everywhere. The variety of colors intrigued me and the smell is intoxicating! One of these Plumeria paintings includes native symbols and pen work in the background. The other is a bud just opening in the early morning!

In the Hood!

Here is a sweet custom illustration I just finished for a client. To me, this little guy just looks like Robin Hood. I am going to do another in a fedora, a little Bogart action, he he, so we'll see what kind of actor he can be!

It is such a joy to me to share my love of animals with others and to be able to take an image and make some itty bitty fantasy of it!

I finally finished up my Old-Timey Dreamboat series! These handsome old-fashioned hunks are all uploaded to Etsy and ready for your perusal and love. :)

I just uploaded a bunch of dapper new gentlemen to my etsy account. I love not only these gents, but my description of them, which I spent some time crafting. If you have any critiques of the men or the description, I'd love them!

"I love old-timey gentlemen, with their facial hair and fancy formal dress. I like how some of them used to wear corsets. I adore side-parts and side-burns.

I have translated this love into a series of original ACEOs celebrating dreamboats of times of yore. Come along with me as we explore these hot gentlemen.

If one strikes your fancy, you can take him home with you, or perhaps carry him in your wallet so you can always see the man that is away fighting bravely for you. He is original, and will never be duplicated, so you know that he is your one true soul mate, and yours alone.

Each of these dapper chaps is 2.5" by 3.5", perfect for trading card sleeves, wallet sleeves, and little frames. The small size means affordability so you can start your art and keepsake collection. Each fellow is encased lovingly in a card sleeve, then placed in a sturdy envelope. He will arrive to you via letter-post. If I could arrange for him to arrive via pony express, I would, but alas, those guys don't come around enough for that to be a reliable mode of transportation.

ACEO Sunflower On Stretched Canvas

This is my newest ACEO - a Sunflower done in Sennelier Oil pastel on Stretched Canvas! The sides measure only 3/4"!

It's sealed and can be hung directly on the wall - a sawtooth hanger is included for free if you'd like. It can be displayed on a small easel, framed or it can be added to an ACEO collection! Wow!

Red-themed ACEOs

I just uploaded a bunch of brand new ACEOS to my Etsy shop. They were made by paintrolling the background on, then adding ink and acrylic overtop to make the images. I hope you like them!

My newest ACEO for sale...it's a cheery little canary!

The wonder of swaps!

Although I belong to this wonderful group I also take part in another group that some of you may know. It is called Boomers and Beyond or BBEST for short!

Last month the BBEST team had an ACEO challenge with the theme set as ‘Spring’. Members were invited to contribute an ACEO in any medium to swap with others. There was a great response and many who had never tried creating an ACEO had a go, and really enjoyed themselves in the process!

For my part I entered the challenge with two, one in my PQ personality and one in my OAW persona.

My PQ ACEO was created using coloured felt pieces, vintage buttons, beads and a signature butterfly. With a bright sun to cheer the viewer on their way I wanted to achieve a bright, springy feel to this one!

The ACEO created under my OAW banner was created in the encaustic medium or painting in wax. Using my trusty travel iron and hot stylus for detail I imagined this stream running through some rocky crags with plants rearing their heads gingerly as Spring approached.

I suppose it was a sneaky way to secure a swap for 2 great ACEO’s. Let me show you what wonderful ACEOs I got in return!

Firstly from Hemlock Hollow came this beauty. She even used rocks (pebbles!) from her creek. Very pretty!

I think this was a ‘first’ and hopefully, not the last.

Meanwhile, the other ACEO I was lucky enough to receive came from Make Your Presents Felt and brought a cheery smile to the day. What a cheerful chappy!

Personally, I thought it was a wonderful way to introduce ACEOs to creators new to this format. To some ACEOs can be very daunting; to have to work in such a small piece of art can be challenging when you are not used to it. However, these two folk had never attempted this before and there were many who have realised what a fun and interesting size it is to work on!
